Artist Statement: Visual movement is often found in nature, even on microscopic plants and animals. This piece is inspired by the texture on the surface of a diatom as seen with a scanning electron microscope. Diatoms are microscopic, single celled aquatic plants that have multilayered cell walls containing pores and ridges that form beautiful patterns.

Materials & Techniques: Four layers of hand dyed and painted cotton fabric were fused to polyester felt or cotton batting. Openings were made in the three top layers to show the layers below. All layers were machine quilted together.
