Image of "River of Time III" quilt by Deborah Gregory

Artist Statement: This work is inspired by the rivers that snake through huge canyons in the Southwest US. It represents both the time it took to form the rivers and canyons and looking forward to the future. On a personal level it represents our individual human life and the passage of time. What will the earth be like in future years? What will humankind experience with the passage of time? What are the possibilities?

Materials & Techniques: I used an innovative technique of cyanotype or blueprinting that I developed for this work.Instead of brushing on the cyanotype fluid and letting it dry, I wet the fabric and shaped it the way I would for shibori and threw the blueprinting fluid on the piece, over layed a resist, then exposed it to the UV rays of the sun. I layered and quilted the piece by machine with rayon thread.
