Pacific Oyster Sculpture by Carla Stehr

Pacific Oyster Sculpture by Carla Stehr

Artist Statement: Pacific Oysters are not native to the US Pacific Coast. They were brought here from Japan in the early 1900s to replace the native Olympia oysters which were nearly wiped out by gold seekers. Pacific Oysters soon spread, sometimes outcompeting the native oysters. Their complex journey includes political and environmental controversy. Now, Pacific Oysters are well managed and often grown like fine wines, providing an economically important resource for Washington State
