The Quilt As Art

image of quilt titled "Patty's 50th Goes Up In Flames" by Patty Hieb © 2003

Artist Statement: This art quilt was my first experiment with creating a whole cloth, airbrushed piece. I had no plan or idea in mind before I started. I just spontaneously started spraying black paint from an airbrush onto a white piece of fabric. And boy, do you have to move fast. That paint just keeps flying out! The memory of an adventure that I had while celebrating my 50th birthday came to mind, and within a short time, though not really knowing what I was doing, this piece evolved before me. Not only was using the airbrush totally fun, but challenging myself to begin without a plan or drawing before hand kept me totally under the guidance of my right brain. A fun exercise that led me to a new favorite medium.

Materials & Techniques: Painted cotton, embroidery thread, shisha mirrors, sequins, seed beads, cotton batting, hand quilted.

Dimensions: 28" wide x 36" high

Artist Bio: Patty attended Western Washington University studying art and later graduated from Cornish College of the Arts with a degree in Interior Design. She made her first traditional quilt in 1981, and after a 20 year uninspired quilting hiatus, she began to sprout her artquilt wings and express her inner creativity. Patty is also a collage artist and makes beaded jewelry.
