Artist Statement: This quilt is number nine in a series of quilts and poetry inspired by the stories of people who were sent to the Japanese American internment camps during World War II. Steps was my second attempt to tackle the theme of Japanese American internment gardens. I used an image from one of the many photos I had taken during my pilgrimage to Manzanar in the spring of 2005. It had been a windy, blue-sky day. Storms raged in the mountains. Death Valley is only sixty miles from here. The steps I photographed lead from the hospital garden to where the hospital used to be.
