Artist Statement: This quilt was inspired by the Mars Exploration Rover Missions by Spirit and Opportunity. I approach the design and construction of my quilts much as an artist approaches a canvas. Even though the quilt is made up of individual pieces, I visualize it in its entirety. I piece in an improvisational manner without templates or ruler and cutting freely. I quilt by machine using lines that not only hold the quilt together, but also tell a story on their own. I continually strive to create works that break the established mold. I feel that my current quilt making is leading me to new forms, and I find myself constantly asking the question, "What if...?"
Dimensions: 35" wide x 40.5" high
Materials & Techniques: Machine pieced using hand-dyed fabrics by Judy Robertson, Diane Smith and me. Machine quilted.
