Fish Skin 2 by Carla StehrArtist Statement: Fish skin is amazingly beautiful when seen up close with a microscope. The surface of each skin cell is covered with tiny ridges, while occasional cells containing mucus (fish slime) occur between the skin cells. This is inspired by a highly magnified image of fish skin that I photographed with a scanning electron microscope during my career as a Fisheries Biologist. Materials & Techniques: Hand dyed fabric was heavily quilted. Several layers of paint were added after quilting. Two layers of painted non-woven polyester material (Lutradur), backed with cotton were sewn into openings made in the quilt. Dimensions: 33 x 27 x 0 Photographer: Carla Stehr |
