Balance: My Battle with Parkinson's by Melisse LaingArtist Statement: Unstable balance, one of the Parkinson’s Disease symptoms I deal with, inspired this three-dimensional piece. Each block is individually constructed and held together with magnets, which through the materials and techniques sets them slightly off-balance no matter how they are arranged. As with Parkinson’s Disease, when this piece is off balance, it can easily fall apart. Materials & Techniques: Materials: Cotton fabrics hand-dyed by artist; polyester & silk quilting threads; Pellon Peltex stabilizer; magnets; super glue; mounting tape; permanent markers; silk ribbon; embroidery floss. Techniques: Machine pieced, glued, quilted, and embellished. Dimensions: 13 x 11 x 5 Photographer: Julie Laing |
