Sue Brown - Procrastination

Artist Statement: We had a year to make a quilt for this challenge. Naturally I put off taking any real action for the first six months or so. Then another challenge opportunity came along and the fabrics in that packet blended well with the silks I had received for this challenge. So I thought I'd try to meet the two challenges with one quilt.

That didn't work out, but it did lead to an idea for the Rituals challenge using one of the other challenge's fabrics. Started working on that about four months before the deadline. Got stuck. Put the project on the back burner, thinking that there was still plenty of time before the deadline in which to figure out how to get unstuck. There would be two full weeks during the holidays that I could use to work on the quilt too. As life would have it, I was too sick to work during those two weeks, and for another full week afterward. That left me with about ten days to complete the quilt. Got the pieces out again ... and still couldn't make them work. One week left. I took a two-day quilt class, and in the middle of it got an inspiration for a new idea for the Rituals challenge, using a second set of silks. Worked it out on graph paper, cut the pieces, sewed them together, and I had a top in a matter of hours. The next day I did the machine quilting and hand embellishment, and the third day I put on the sleeve and label. Done! (With twelve hours to spare!)

Materials and Techniques: Silk and cotton fabrics with beads. Machine pieced and machine quilted; hand embroidered.
