The Conservationist by Janet Darcher![]() Artist Statement: The Conservationist has made a heroic effort to maintain Willapa Bay in Southwest Washington. He stands in front of an airboat which he has operated for over 25 years in efforts to eradicate both vegetation and aquatic species that threaten the bay. Framing the piece highlights the work as a traditional portrait in a non-traditional medium; the quilt as portrait. Materials & Techniques: The artist manipulated a photo in Prisma and printed the image on cotton fabric at Spoonflower. The work is free motion quilted using over 60 colors of cotton thread, cotton backing and silk batting were used. It is framed using archival methods and an upcycled frame.
