Voracious by Carolyn HigginsArtist Statement: My oldest son, Brendan, is a wildlife biologist and photographer. While in the field in northern Alaska, he captured the image of a red necked phalarope, a tiny grayish shorebird that winters in tropical ocean waters, returning to the Arctic for breeding season. This quilt is my rendering of this hungry phalarope. Perfectly reflected in the greenish shallow waters on a rocky beach, this little bird was intent on foraging - hungrily searching for mollusks, insects, or whatever happened to be unlucky enough to get too close to that sharp and determined beak. Materials & Techniques: Commercial and hand-dyed cottons and raw silk, netting. Dimensions: 22 x 31 x 0 Photographer: Fred Higgins |
