The Blue of Distance by Stephanie Ostmann![]() Artist Statement: I love botanical shapes and they often inspire my quilts. This piece began as a celebration of iris spears pushing toward a blue spring sky. As I worked, it became something more abstract and elusive. Pointed shapes reach toward an ethereal blue, like the distant blue that tints mountains. They remind me of our human longing - for a person, a place, an ideal that exists at a distance. Materials & Techniques: Hand-dyed and commercial cottons, recycled silks and other fabrics are machine pieced and quilted, then hand embellished with pearl cotton and sashiko threads. Dimensions: 32 x 50 x 0 Photographer: Fred Higgins |
