Artist Statement: Diatoms are microscopic, unicellular aquatic plants with stunning surface patterns unique to each species. As a marine biologist I saw that diatoms and other marine life were amazing when seen with a microscope. The beauty in science led me to explore art. My journey from scientist to artist has come full circle; this piece is based on a scientific image of a diatom that I photographed with a scanning electron microscope.

Materials & Techniques: Two layers of hand dyed cotton fabric, felt, machine and hand stitching.
