Carla Stehr - Microscape 3

Carla Stehr - Microscape 3

Artist Statement: Microscopes manipulate light so that we can visualize objects far too small for our unaided eyes to see. Electron microscopes use television-like technology to convert electrons to light. This piece is inspired by a pattern of microscopic ridges seen on the back of a spider with a scanning electron microscope. Without this manipulation of light, we would never know that incredibly beautiful microscopic patterns exist in unexpected places.

Materials & Techniques: Cotton fabric and wool bating were free motion stitched with white cotton thread. Multiple layers of fabric paint and water soluble colored pencil were applied after stitching.

Dimensions: 31" x 23"

Photographer: Carla Stehr
