Carla Stehr - Roncador SwirlsArtist Statement: Sunlight shining through shallow water and reflecting off a white sand river bed make the tannic waters of the Roncador River in Brazil appear to be beautiful shades of burgundy and purple. A nearby waterfall produces foamy swirls that float on the water’s surface. Materials & Techniques: Soy Wax resist was applied to cotton fabric, then painted with thickened dye. The swirls were free motion quilted by machine with white cotton thread. Diluted fabric paint and water soluble colored pencil were added to the swirls after stitching. The colored water was hand quilted with stab stiches using pearl cotton embroidery thread. Dimensions: 35" x 19.5" Photographer: Carla Stehr |
