Covered Bridge by Suzanne UscholdArtist Statement: I am primarily inspired by the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest with its majestic mountains, towering evergreens, serene lakes and crashing surf. When I began making landscape quilts, I started to experience the outdoors in a whole new way - looking more closely at colors, shapes, shading and composition to figure out how to turn a natural landscape into a quilt. Materials & Techniques: I usually start with a photograph for inspiration, and then gather an assortment of fabric to find patterns and colors that will best represent the natural beauty in the scene. With fabrics chosen, I begin to assemble the quilt top with techniques including collage, fusible and raw edge applique. Batting and backing are added to the top and quilted together, using a combination of free motion quilting and thread painting to add finer details.
